In our home, we love the holidays. Each year we look forward to putting up the tree, the lights, the stockings and the decorations. The whole family is excited as our home transforms into our own little version of a winter wonderland. But as much as that is our favorite time of year, once the hustle and bustle of the season is done, I look forward to the day when all the decorations come down, get put in their boxes and go into hibernation for another year.
Taking the decorations down is part of a symbolic process of renewal and cleaning. We try to eliminate the clutter, tidy up our spaces and set the tone inside our walls for all that each new year has in store. January is often a time where we reflect and spend time setting personal goals for the year ahead. Many people create a word to focus on for the new year (this year, mine is consistency!) or resolutions such as learning a new skill, losing weight, exercising more or advancing in their career. It’s estimated that nearly 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail, with most people giving up by February or March.
Have you ever thought about resolutions for your home? Whether it is a small change, seasonal maintenance or a big project here are some New Years Resolutions for your home that can make a big impact in your life.

Spend time walking through your home and making a list of the small things that often fall by the wayside. These can include replacing furnace and refrigerator filters, changing fire alarm batteries, re-caulking showers and tubs, changing sprinkler heads and touching up paint. Regular maintenance of items like these help prevent bigger issue (and costs) down the road.
Eliminating stress, chaos and distractions by decluttering and getting organized can make you and your home happier, more productive and more successful. Start with the areas of your home where you spend the most time. After a deep cleaning and a few donation trips to your favorite organization or a garage sale, create daily habits that help you stay organized. Here is is a great article with some tips to consistently keeping a tidy home.
Maybe you are saving for a remodel, a down payment on a new home or just putting money away for peace of mind. Take some time to go through all of your subscriptions and cancel any duplicates or any that you aren't using. Other easy ways to save some money here and there include eating at home one more meal per week, turning your thermostat down a few degrees and switching to generic brands on groceries when possible. If you're like me, your freezer is probably loaded with food that gets further shoved to the back of the pack with each grocery trip. Make an inventory of your freezer and pantry so you can maximize your meals off of what you already have, and save money as you go.
Maybe you have been wanting to paint the office, give that bathroom a facelift, clean out the toy room and make it more useful for the kiddos as they are a year older or just clean out the overflowing junk drawer. Make a list of all the places in your home you would like to touch this year. Just writing goals down makes them much more likely to achieve. Start small and start with one room or one shelf and you can transform your home without it feeling like a daunting task.
If you are thinking about selling your home but first need to make improvements on it, Compass – the leading brokerage in Denver Metro area in sales volume and market share – offers its Compass Concierge program. Compass Concierge fronts for the cost of home improvement services with no interest so that you can sell your home quicker and for a higher price. Covered services include floor repair, carpet replacement, staging, cosmetic renovations, landscaping, painting, kitchen improvements and more.
How it works is simple. You and your Compass agent work together to decide which services will increase your home’s value the most. Then your Compass agent will be by your side as you engage vendors and start the work. Once the transformation is complete, your home goes on the market. You only pay for the services when one of following happens — your home sells, you terminate your listing agreement with Compass, or 12 months pass from your Concierge start date. Contact our team today if this service would benefit you!
Getting your home organized and ready for the new year doesn’t have to be an intimidating process. Many times, you can make a big difference by just investing a little bit of time or money to get things in order. Now that sounds like a doable New Year’s resolution that we can keep!
