Meet Dale Schossow of the Schossow Group

Leading the way in Denver real estate for more than 40 years, get to know Dale Schossow as he shares what he's most proud of in his career, the importance of family and local Colorado favorites

The Schossow Group

Dale Schossow has a distinguished career in the real estate industry spanning over 40 years of residential brokerage, including representing some of the finest luxury homes and communities in Colorado. He has owned and operated three brokerage firms and worked with clients in all facets of real estate sales, custom home construction, and development.

Dale’s expertise and knowledge in new construction real estate is extensive and comprehensive. He was the Community Manager and Broker in charge of sales at Buell Mansion in Cherry Hills Village, from the initial lot closing to the final home sale. He then was the Operations Director and Listing Broker at the exclusive Club at Ravenna and was responsible for closing home sites  and builder custom homes.

The exceptional team of real estate agents who make up the Schossow Group of Compass Denver are the heartbeat of our success. We firmly believe that our most valuable asset is our people and we invite you to get to know our team who works hard every day to make your real estate goals and dreams a reality.

Get to know Dale more including why he got into real estate, his local Colorado favorites, the biggest keys to his success and more...

When and why did you get into real estate?
I began sniffing around the business in 1979. The real reason I made the full time job change was that I wanted to control my own schedule, determine my own rewards and suffer my own mistakes. In 1980, I took the plunge with a mortgage in place, 4 very young children, and obligations that go along with all of that. It was a great choice for me, but I had no idea what it would involve!

How much has real estate changed during your career?
For those who remember 1979, it was the "dark ages" for so many things, and real estate sales is one. We drove hand written contracts all over town, had pagers clipped to our belts so we could stop at a pay phone to stay in touch and MLS books showing inventory. Automation did not exist, except when we got our first fax machine. Today, as everyone knows, it's a new game...but one constant remains: People buy homes and people sell homes, and each and every one has different needs and desires. It is still a people and “relationship” business.

What are the biggest key to your success?
Never give up, dogged persistence, creative problem solving and sincere care for clients wants and needs.

What is the proudest moment of your career?
I try to avoid being proud of work related events. But, with that being said, #1 would be working alongside family…it’s the best. #2. Having Peyton Manning buy one of my listings was fun. #3. Having never quit in spite of the dramatic pitfalls of the interest rates of the 80’s to 9/11, to the crash of 2008 and on through today.

Any funny or embarrassing stories you can share? I locked myself and my prospective buyer outside a house, on a deck that had no stairs. The deck was 75 feet above the ground on the side of a cliff. No cell phones, no keys, no way down, no way out. It was embarrassing, but it was also pretty scary.

How do you balance work and life along with family?
The best I can.  I am far better at it now than I used to be.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work?
With 4 children, and 13 grandchildren, we enjoy lots of family time. I love, love, love to fish along with golf and spending as much time as is possible in the mountains and Gunnison.

Favorite Colorado getaway?
My wife and I have moved to Gunnison a number of times over our 50+ years together.  We have a getaway place there now, on the golf course, and a short golf cart ride to Tomichi Creek, the Gunnison River, and I love Blue Mesa Reservoir. We’re not big on the resort style mountain towns, and Gunnison is the perfect “Colorado” mountain town.

Best concert you’ve ever attended or would like to attend?
Steve Miller playing in a college gymnasium to about 100 people in the dark. The power went out and he sat and played alone in the dark! Stephan Stills "a walk on" at Tulogie’s in Boulder, Willie Nelson at a little downtown bar in Denver, Jimi Hendrix at Red Rocks, and being back stage with Little Feat and the Beach Boys...those were fun! I missed seeing the Beatles because I did not have the $5.75 for a ticket...missing that show at Red Rocks was a mistake!

Any favorite charities or non-profits?
Dare2Share, Endurance Ministries, Hope House of Colorado, Mission Hill Church.

If you weren’t in real estate, what do you think you would be doing?
If I had do-over’s I would have a law degree, but would most likely still be doing what I do in real estate brokerage.

Why did you start The Schossow Group?
It was a result of having the honor of having Nick and April (two of our four kids) go into this business.

Your favorite updates to see in a home/what you look for first in a home?
I am more wow’d by location and outdoor living space.

What is your best quality you bring to add value for your clients?
I have always tried to surround myself with great people. Today the members of The Schossow Group are truly the best at what they do, from Michael Petrelli (marketing) to each broker/member of the Schossow Group to Compass. I like to deal with problems. Every transaction has some, but when presented with what seems to be an unsolvable issue or problem, I enjoy working it through to a successful end.
